My partner D was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in June 2020, after six months prior to this of having various sleep and mood issues. Luckily for us we were able to join in with the Forest of Avon’s Woodland Wellbeing group on 22 June. We didn’t really know what to expect but knew straight away that everyone was made so welcome and didn’t feel pressurised into anything they didn’t feel happy with. We enjoyed the initial visit, and after a lot of talk on our way home D decided he would like to go again. Personally I have enjoyed meeting others in a less restricted environment, who I know understand completely how we feel. Being outside makes it easier to have one to one conversations. I enjoy it and relax because I know D is in a safe situation no matter what the topic is or various crafts for us to take part in. It’s good at the moment to still do something new, makes him think, a challenge and gives him varied subjects to talk about. Our family and friends all ask what we have been doing on ‘Woodland Wednesdays’. You have also given me a few ideas to try at home, thank you! I notice that D is more involved generally after the morning session and sleeps better. We have always spent a lot of our leisure time walking, as we have been fortunate to have places on our doorstep. But now that it’s getting more difficult to do this, the opportunity to socialise in a woodland situation has been invaluable.
